India has called for sanctions from the Jaish-e-Mohammad militant set it says carried out Thursday’s suicide attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Delhi asks for the pioneer of this Pakistan-based team to be recorded as a terrorist by the UN.
The attack has killed at least 40 Indian paramilitary authorities and it has become the worst in decades in the area.
Pakistan said that it was seriously concerned by the bombing but rejected allegations it was responsible for it.
The bomber used a vehicle full of explosives to ram to a convoy of all India’s security forces.
Both India and Pakistan claim every one of Muslim-majority Kashmir but just dominate portions of it.
How did the strike unfold?
The explosion happened around the heavily guarded Srinagar-Jammu street about 20km (12 miles) from the capital, Srinagar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, main opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and two former chief ministers of both Jammu and Kashmir, all condemned the attack and expressed their condolences.
The attack has also been widely condemned around the globe, including by the US and the UN Secretary General.
However, the attempts were repeatedly blocked by China, an ally of Pakistan.
“The Indian security establishment had been chest-thumping lately months on the way they managed to contain the insurgency. This attack though is really a reminder that the battle is far from over.”
He adds that it sets the the Indian government in a predicament as”strongarm tactics” could “alienate” Kashmiri individuals, while not taking any actions may also hurt Mr Modi, who is seeking re-election in a few months.
What’s the background?
There has already been at least 10 suicide attacks since 1989 however this is just the second suicide attack to use a vehicle.
Prior to Thursday’s bombing, the deadliest attack on Indian security forces in Kashmir this century came in 2002, when militants killed at least 31 people at a military base in Kaluchak near Jammu, most of them civilians and family members of soldiers.
Atleast 1 9 Indian soldiers were killed when militants stormed a base in Uri in 2016. Delhi blamed that attack on the state, which refused any involvement.
The most recent strike also follows a spike in violence in Kashmir which came about after Indian forces murdered a favorite militant, 22-year-old Burhan Wani, in 2016.
More than 500 individuals were murdered in 2018 – including civilians, security forces and militants – the greatest for example toll within several decade.
India and Pakistan have fought three wars and also a restricted struggle since independence from Britain in 1947 – but one were Kashmir.
Who would be Jaish-e-Mohammad?
Launched by cleric Masood Azhar in 2000, the group was blamed for attacks on Indian land in the past, including one in 2001 on the parliament in Delhi which took India and Pakistan to the brink of war.
It has been declared a”terrorist” organisation by India, the united kingdom, US and UN and has since been banned in Pakistan as 2002.
Nevertheless Masood Azhar remains at large and is allegedly situated at the Bahawalpur area in Pakistan’s Punjab province.
Previous Indian efforts to own designated a terrorist by the UN have been obstructed by China.
India has also required his extradition from Pakistan but Islamabad has denied, citing a shortage of proof.
